Nature’s Healing Power In A Jar

News articles have referred to a special variation of honey, called Manuka honey, as an anti-ageing ingredient which celebrities swear by. High-profile celebrities, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Kourtney Kardashian, among others, have sworn by this honey as a secret ingredient.

“One particular type of honey called Manuka honey (a mono-floral type of honey that comes from a tree native to Australia and New Zealand) is taking the beauty world by storm because it is chock-full of benefits that improve all skin types, plus refresh and rejuvenate the appearance,” says an article on SheFinds.

And when it comes to natural beauty remedies, few ingredients have achieved the cult status of Manuka honey. Harvested from bees that pollinate the Manuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium), its high concentration of antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and healing compounds has made it a favourite not just in health circles but also in skincare routines across the globe.

But what exactly makes Manuka honey so special for your skin? Let’s talk about it, like pronto!

Celebrating Honey As Nature’s Beauty Elixir

Honey, of course, has been prized for centuries for its beauty and medicinal properties. It’s known for offering a wide range of benefits for the skin. This is because honey has a powerful natural ingredient that helps lock in moisture without leaving a greasy residue.

This makes it ideal for all skin types, including oily and sensitive skin. And it’s these natural antibacterial properties that allow it to combat acne-causing bacteria, helping to reduce breakouts and calm inflammation.

Of course, making it all the rage amongst many.

But, What Sets Manuka Honey Apart From The Rest?

As mentioned, all types of honey have natural healing powers, but when it comes to Manuka honey, something reigns supreme. And this something is called the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF).

The UMF is a special rating that shows how strong its antibacterial properties are. It’s based on three key ingredients, namely, MGO, DHA, and leptosperin. All of which give Manuka honey its powerful ability to fight bacteria.

Remember, the higher the UMF, the stronger the honey. Therefore, unlike regular honey, which can lose its benefits when heated or mixed with other things, Manuka honey stays effective, even when applied straight to the skin. UMF properties for the win!

Suitability For Sensitive SkinVery suitable due to purity and antibacterial strengthGenerally safe but depends on floral source and additives

So, What Are The Top Manuka Honey Benefits?

We are so glad you asked! Otherwise, what was there to write about, right? So, in no particular order, Manuka honey is great as:

    1. A Natural Cleanser For Acne-Prone Skin

One of the most celebrated benefits of Manuka honey is its ability to combat acne (Propionibacterium acnes). Thanks to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, it helps reduce redness, swelling, and the bacteria responsible for breakouts.

Using Manuka honey as a gentle cleanser or mask can help decongest pores without stripping your skin of its natural oils. It also soothes irritated skin, making it perfect for people with sensitive or reactive skin types.

It is generally recommended that you apply a thin layer of raw Manuka honey (UMF 10+ or higher) to clean, dry skin and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and pat dry. Use 2 to 3 times a week for clearer, calmer skin. And just like that, Bob’s your uncle.

    2. Deep Hydration Without The Grease

Forget heavy moisturisers because Manuka honey delivers hydration naturally. It’s a humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the environment into your skin, helping to keep it plump, dewy, and smooth.

Yes, we need to compare, because unlike synthetic products, it does this without clogging pores or leaving a greasy residue. This makes it especially helpful during the colder months when skin tends to feel tight, flaky, or dry.

According to those who swear by it, all you have to do is mix one teaspoon of Manuka honey with a few drops of hyaluronic acid serum or aloe vera gel. Then, apply to your face and leave on for 20 minutes before rinsing off.

    3. Heals And Revives Damaged Skin

From sunburns to eczema flare-ups, Manuka honey’s healing powers go beyond beauty. Its antimicrobial properties protect your skin while its anti-inflammatory effects promote faster tissue regeneration. This means it can help fade scars, soothe wounds, and support recovery from environmental damage.

Some studies even show that Manuka honey may stimulate collagen production, an essential protein for youthful, firm skin. So, to heal and revive, simply use a dab of Manuka honey on healing blemishes or dry patches overnight. It reduces irritation while supporting natural regeneration.

    4. Gentle Exfoliation For Radiant Glow

Since Manuka honey contains natural enzymes that help gently break down dead skin cells, revealing a brighter, smoother complexion without the use of physical exfoliants. This enzymatic action also enhances skin clarity and helps fade hyperpigmentation over time.

Just combine one tablespoon of Manuka honey with half a teaspoon of finely ground oats or almond meal, and gently massage onto damp skin and leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing.

    5. Anti-Ageing Ally

Of course, it goes without saying that Manuka honey won’t reverse time, its antioxidant content does help fight free radicals (those pesky molecules responsible for accelerating ageing) by neutralising oxidative stress.

That means, Manuka honey helps prevent fine lines, wrinkles, and dullness. Regular use may also improve skin elasticity and tone, giving your complexion a firmer, more youthful appearance. So, if interested, just mix a drop of Manuka honey with your nighttime serum or moisturiser for an added antioxidant boost.

So, To Manuka Or Not To Manuka Honey, The Answer Is …

Not all jars are created equal. For skincare, look for Manuka honey with a UMF rating of 10+ or higher, as this ensures therapeutic levels of MGO and other bioactive compounds. Ideally, it should be raw, unpasteurised, and sustainably sourced.

If you’re using it frequently on your face, opt for a high-quality cosmetic-grade product to ensure it’s free from contaminants or additives.

But all in all, Manuka honey has made waves within the beauty industry and has proven to deliver results. So, if you’re truly interested in giving it a try, talk to a trusted skincare specialist beforehand. And let us know, we can’t wait to hear about your experience in the comments below!
