There are so many commercially available facials and masks, but apart from the cost benefit, there is something special about preparing your own mix to treat your skin. Like with everything else, you cannot beat homemade, right?

And in this article, I got resourceful. With these luscious face mask recipes, you can bring the escapism of the spa into the comfort of your own home. Besides, there is little better for your skin than a good old face mask to soothe or refresh your complexion. They can be the loving shoulder at the end of a tough day or an active part of a skin rejuvenation routine, zapping problem skin, trouble patches, and blemishes away. Or they can be the creative outlet you have been yearning for. And let us be honest, DIY is the way to glow today.

So, without further ado, join us as we look at the best homemade face mask recipes that work wonders for your skin!

Homemade Balance Dry Skin Face Mask

An photo of a woman that applied a Homemade Balance Dry Skin Face Mask to her skin

Dry skin can be quite a troublesome foe. In fact, in the UK, approximately 15 to 20% of the population struggles with it. So, why not give it the cold shoulder with this DIY face mask recipe that helps balance the moisture in your skin? Clay-based and supercharged with honey and lavender oil, the aromatic scent is relaxing for the nervous system and bouts of insomnia (and super hydrating, of course).

    Ingredients:

    • 6 tsp clay
    • 1 tsp natural raw honey
    • 2 tsp aloe vera juice
    • 3 drops of lavender essential oil
    • Dash of natural spring water

Raw honey is a natural humectant, meaning it attracts and retains moisture, helping to keep the skin soft and hydrated. Whereas aloe vera juice supports skin hydration by deeply moisturising and maintaining the skin’s suppleness. When it comes to lavender essential oil, it can help regulate sebum production. And together, these ingredients offer a gentle, natural approach to promoting healthy, well-moisturised skin.

    How to make:

    • Mix the ingredients until they form a smooth textured paste.
    • Massage the finished mix into your face, getting good and healthy coverage.
    • Leave for 10-20 minutes before rinsing off the face mask with warm water.
    • Gently pat dry the skin after you have washed it.

    Stress-Relief Face Mask

A woman applying a DIY face mask recipe for stress-face mask

Everyone is stressed, but not everyone knows the key to beating stress may actually be in your cupboard! How cool is that? Very cool.

We prepared a powerful blend of oat powder, chamomile powder, yoghurt and clay. It soothes the skin, relaxes the body and supplies helpful nutrients that make you feel calmer and healthier. It is, in our opinion, the perfect de-stressing experience we all need at the end of a difficult week.

    Ingredients:

    • 6 tbsp Oat Powder
    • 4 tbsp Chamomile Powder
    • 4 tbsp Kaolin Clay
    • 1 tbsp Turmeric powder
    • 1 tbsp full-fat plain yoghurt
    • 1 tbsp of raw natural honey
    • Add water if the solution is too thick (optional)

Oat powder has strong anti-inflammatory properties, and chamomile powder boasts natural anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and soothing effects. When it comes to Kaolin clay, it is a gentle and natural ingredient that offers several benefits for the skin. And of course, turmeric powder is widely praised for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties too.

    How to make:

    • Mix the ingredients until they form into a smooth textured paste, and let it sit for 2 minutes.
    • Massage the finished paste into your face.
    • Leave for at least 15 minutes before rinsing off the face mask with warm water and a soft cloth.

    Hyperpigmentation Face Mask

A homemade face mask recipe for a hyperpigmentation mask

This acid and vitamin-based face mask is formulated to target hyperpigmentation problems specifically, an issue that affects at least 1 in 4 people in the UK. This DIY face mask also helps reduce skin irritation and wrinkles by using turmeric, an ingredient that is clinically proven to address hyperpigmentation. Here is an interesting stat, a 2013 clinical study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology showed that a topical formulation containing turmeric extract reduced hyperpigmentation severity by around 25% after 8 weeks of use. So, there you have it.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 tbsp of fresh turmeric powder
    • 1 tbsp of fresh lemon juice
    • A healthy splash of water
    • 1 tbsp of honey (optional)

Did you know that lemon juice is rich in vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that can help lighten dark spots and even out skin tone, giving your skin a natural glow? This makes it well worth adding to the mix.

    How to make:

    • Mix the ingredients until they form a smooth textured paste.
    • Massage the mix into your face and leave for 3-5 minutes before rinsing off the face mask with warm water.
    • This face mask is particularly effective if you use it over five weeks at a frequency of twice a week.

    Homemade Banana Glow Face Mask

an image of a women enjoying a Homemade Banana Glow Face Mask

Transport yourself to the beaches of heaven with this healthy and natural face mask designed for all skin types. Using banana, orange juice, honey and water, this mask moisturises the skin and leaves you with a natural glow on the surface. Yes please!

    Ingredients:

    • ½ banana
    • 1 tbsp orange juice
    • 1 tbsp honey
    • 1 tsp of water (optional)

Bananas are not just delicious, they are also fantastic for your skin! Especially since they are rich in natural oils and vitamins that help moisturise dry skin and keep it soft and supple. Not to mention, orange juice contains a lot of water and natural sugars that help keep your skin hydrated and plump, reducing dryness and flakiness. Regular topical use of orange juice may also help fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation, giving a more even and glowing complexion.

    How to make:

    • Mix the ingredients until they form a smooth textured paste & don’t worry if there are lumps.
    • Apply the face mask and leave for 15 minutes before rinsing off the face mask with warm water.
    • This face mask also works wonders when used before your regular moisturiser!

    Soothe Irritating Skin Face Mask

A woman showing off her homemade Soothe Irritating Skin Face Mask on her face

If your skin is easily irritated by city pollution and the general wear and tear of the day, this soothing face mask can help comfort the skin and combat redness.

The deep hydration, antioxidants and soothing properties come from coconut oil, honey and lavender oil. These ingredients hold essential fatty acids that add moisture and suppleness to the skin. And the end result is a spa-like face mask.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 tsp coconut oil
    • ¼ of a ripe avocado
    • 2-3 drops of lavender oil
    • 1 tsp of honey

Coconut oil offers several benefits for the skin, thanks to its natural composition of fatty acids, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory compounds, which help lock in moisture and soften the skin. It’s particularly helpful for dry or flaky skin, providing lasting hydration. And ripe avocados, well, they are basically a skincare powerhouse, thanks to their rich nutrient profile and natural fats, which help moisturise and nourish the skin, making it soft and supple.

    How to make:

    • Mix the ingredients until they form a smooth textured paste.
    • Massage the mix into your face and leave for 10-15 minutes before rinsing off the face mask with warm water.

DIY Face Mask for Sensitive Skin

    DIY Mask on lady's face

If you experience regular bouts of redness, you cannot beat a yoghurt-based face mask. It is packed with probiotics and proteins that soothe the skin. The cocoa powder is also backed with flavonoids, which calm irritation. And on top of that, honey is a wonder ingredient that tightens the skin for a finished glow-up.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 tbsp yoghurt
    • 1 tsp cocoa powder
    • 1 tsp of honey

Cocoa powder is packed with antioxidants like flavonoids, which help fight free radicals that cause skin ageing and damage. This can lead to healthier, more youthful-looking skin. PLUS, it also helps to lock in moisture, keeping the skin hydrated and soft. It can be especially beneficial for dry or flaky skin. The more you know, right?

    How to make:

    • Mix the ingredients until they form a paste.
    • This should take no longer than 30 seconds to one minute.
    • Massage the mix into your face, ensure you get full coverage and leave for 15 minutes before rinsing with warm water.

    Vinegar Skin Toner Face Mask

    ACV skin mask

Face masks and vinegar have been working together since the days of Helen of Troy. Vinegar is a popular ingredient throughout the ages, probably because it helps tone the skin and clean and tighten the surface.

    Ingredients:

    • ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar
    • ¼ cup of water

Apple cider vinegar has gained popularity as a natural skincare remedy thanks to its antibacterial, antifungal, and pH-balancing properties. It has a mildly acidic pH (around 3), which can help restore and maintain the skin’s natural acid mantle. This barrier protects against environmental pollutants, bacteria, and moisture loss. It also (when diluted with water) works as an effective toner that tightens the skin, reduces the appearance of pores, and helps control oil production.

    How to make:

    • Mix the ingredients and apply the finished solution to the face.
    • Massage the mix into your face, making sure you get full coverage.
    • Leave it to dry for 10 minutes before wiping it off with warm water.

    DIY Hydrating Skin Face Mask

    DIY Hydrating Skin Face Mask

It can be hard to find moisture for those of you who suffer from flaky and dry skin. This homemade face mask might sound like a breakfast recipe, but it is not for eating.

The honey helps the skin retain moisture and helps with the appearance of scars by healing and activating tissue regeneration. The oats are great at nourishing and soothing the skin, whilst the avocado leaves the skin feeling smooth as ever.

    Ingredients:

    • Handful of oats
    • ½ avocado
    • 1 tbsp of honey

Unlike adding ripe avocado like one of our previously mentioned homemade facial masks, actual, I-want-to-eat-you-on-toast avocado contains vitamin C, vitamin E, and carotenoids (like lutein and zeaxanthin), which help fight free radicals, reduce oxidative stress, and slow down signs of ageing such as fine lines and dullness.

    How to make:

    • Mix and mash the ingredients together until they form a paste.
    • Massage the mix into your face and leave for 15 minutes before rinsing with warm water.

Homemade Face Mask For Uneven Skin

Homemade Face Mask For Uneven Skin

Do not worry about expensive facials and purchasing tubs and tubs of scrubs to improve your uneven skin texture and toner anymore, especially when you can do it all at home!

This yoghurt-based face mask lifts the skin’s surface, brightening it. The added honey smooths the skin and fights against pockets of pigmentation. Need we say more? Yes, the recipe! It goes as follows:

    Ingredients:

    • 1 tbsp of natural plain yoghurt
    • 1 tbsp of turmeric powder
    • 1 tbsp of honey

Plain yoghurt is packed with skin-loving nutrients that make it a great natural ingredient for skincare. It is rich in fats and proteins, which help to nourish and deeply hydrate the skin. Plain yoghurt also contains lactic acid, a type of alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that helps exfoliate dead skin cells. This promotes a smoother texture and brighter complexion without being too harsh.

    How to make:

    • Mash the ingredients together until they form a paste.
    • Massage the mix into your face and leave for 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water.

    DIY Acne Buster Face Mask

    DIY Acne Buster Face Mask

There is probably nothing more infuriating than acne. Well, maybe clusters of acne, but you get the point. And with around 34% of UK adults having experienced acne at some point, and about 24% of young adults dealing with some form of acne currently, clearly it is an ongoing issue for all.

This do-it-yourself face mask is good at combating whiteheads, blackheads and acne because the Manuka can zap bacteria away whilst the turmeric soothes the redness. Turmeric is also anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial, which means it can reduce infection. The end result is clear and impressive skin. However, since acne is not a copy-and-paste situation, please talk to your dermatologist before swinging open the cupboard and fridge doors. This just helps ensure that yes, this mask could benefit you, versus potentially aggravating your condition.

    Ingredients:

    • ½ tsp of Dead Sea salt
    • 1 tbsp of turmeric powder
    • 1 tbsp of Manuka honey

Dead Sea salt helps draw out impurities, toxins, and excess oils from the skin. The minerals, especially magnesium, calcium, and potassium, aid in detoxifying pores and improving skin clarity. Manuka honey, on the other hand, is renowned for its unique healing properties, especially when applied to the skin. It is believed to soothe inflammation, as well as combat acne-causing bacteria, prevent infection in wounds and blemishes, AND support overall skin health. Sounds like an amazing win-win to me!

    How to make:

    • Mix the ingredients until they form a paste.
    • Use a brush to apply it gently on the face and in areas of high acne, blackheads and whiteheads.
    • Leave for 10-15 minutes before rinsing with warm water.

Homemade Cooling Mask For Oily Skin

A lady flaunting a Homemade Cooling Mask for Oily Skin on her face

This homemade face mask hydrates the skin and reduces break-out activity with its richness in vitamin C. The added avocado manages the oil levels in your skin and reduces inflammation. It is great for hydrated and dehydrated skin because it is water-based due to the cucumber.

    Ingredients:

    • ½ avocado
    • ¼ cucumber (blended)

Cucumbers are made up of about 95% water, making them incredibly hydrating! Applying cucumber or cucumber juice helps your skin in SO MANY WAYS! It helps replenish moisture, soothes dry, flaky skin, and refreshes tired or dull complexions. There you have it. Cucumber away!

    How to make:

    • Mix the ingredients until they form a paste.
    • Apply on the face, getting good coverage and all of the T-zone.
    • Leave for 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water.

    Do It Yourself!

Just because you feel lazy and do not want to labour at the spa does not mean your skin should be ignored. These 11 great homemade face masks are designed to combat various skin problems and irritations with ingredients from the back of your cupboard.

So, get to mixing and show your face some love!
