We have all heard the saying, “as smooth as a baby’s bum.” Which begs the question: why exactly is a baby’s bum so smooth? It is simple, and it is called nappy cream. It creates a protective barrier that helps prevent babies from getting nappy rash. But here is the thing, you do not need to be a baby to enjoy the benefits nappy cream offers. Because if you have ever experienced that itchy, persistent rash after a good shave, then nappy cream might just be your saving grace.
I think many of us (especially those who have sensitive skin) have discovered that sometimes, our usual remedies just do not cut it. This was exactly my situation recently. I had that annoying razor burn on my legs from shaving, and none of my go-to products were working. We are talking strawberry legs for days.
It was at that moment I remembered a trick I had recently read about online. Can you guess what it was? You guessed right, good ol’ nappy cream! Of course, before becoming a mum, I was blissfully unaware of the many uses of nappy creams, never mind nappy cream brands like Sudocrem (which basically falls under nappy cream royalty).
So, to full circle back to my unexpected and uninvited shaving rash, I decided to give Sudocrem a try, applying it twice daily over the course of three days. And it worked like a charm! And here is why …
Why Nappy Cream Works

Nappy creams like Sudocrem are packed with ingredients that help calm irritated skin. Most of them have anti-inflammatory properties to soothe redness and itching, and at their core, they are designed to form a protective layer over the skin so it can heal. This is what makes them especially great when your skin feels a bit aggravated from the razor, and needs a little bit extra TLC.
That is my take on the matter. However, Pam Marshall, founder of the skin clinic Mortar & Milk, also recommends using Sudocrem for exactly this reason. She says:
“Sudocrem is one of those multipurpose products that works wonders on irritated skin. It’s not just for babies, anyone with sensitive, inflamed skin can benefit from its calming properties.”
Because Sudocrem, ladies and gents, as mentioned earlier, is the crème de la crème of nappy creams! It contains zinc oxide, a powerhouse ingredient known for reducing inflammation and offering gentle antiseptic benefits. Unlike regular moisturisers that simply sit on the surface, Sudocrem actively calms redness and helps protect your skin from further irritation too. This makes it ideal for soothing post-shave irritation.
Soothing Your Shaving Rash With Sudocrem

Using Sudocrem (or a similar nappy cream like Bepanthen) for shaving rash is really straightforward. Here is what I did:
- Apply After Shaving: To prevent irritation, apply a light layer immediately after shaving. It helps to lock in moisture and calm your skin before any rash can develop.
- Avoid Too Much Product: If a rash has already developed, take a small dollop of Sudocrem and apply it directly to the irritated area. It is important to cover the entire affected area to protect it. Just remember, a little goes a long way! Too much cream might make it difficult for your skin to breathe, so stick to a thin, even layer.
- Massage Gently: Massage the cream in gently until there is a thin, visible layer on your skin.
- Reapply Twice Daily: I found the best results by applying it twice a day, once in the morning and again at night. Within three days, the rash was almost entirely gone, and my skin felt soothed and comfortable.
- Patch Test: If you have never used Sudocrem before, do a quick patch test to make sure your skin does not negatively react to it. Plus, do not forget, Sudocrem is an extremely dense lotion, meaning it could possibly stick to your clothes. Apply in the morning and strut around the house in old clothes for a bit.
More Than Just Rash Relief, Here Are Other Uses For Sudocrem
Nappy cream is one of those multipurpose products that is fantastic to have on hand (and not just for shaving rash). It is also incredibly useful for a variety of everyday skin concerns. For instance, if you have areas of very dry skin, such as elbows or knees, nappy cream can provide an extra boost of hydration.
It is also great for relieving chafing, especially during the warmer months when friction becomes a common issue. And thanks to its soothing properties, it can even be used on minor burns or cuts to help calm and protect the skin as it heals!
An Unexpected Hero For Irritated Skin
Sometimes the best beauty hacks are hiding in plain sight. Nappy cream like Sudocrem is a fantastic product for anyone dealing with shaving rash or other forms of skin irritation.
So, the next time you are struggling with a shaving rash that just refuses to go away, skip the usual remedies and reach for some nappy cream instead. It is simple, effective, and works surprisingly well for keeping your skin calm.
