Traditional Chinese medicine has always shone a spotlight on radiant skin. Now, one of its ‘best-kept secrets’, pearl powder, is going viral. While pearl powder is an ancient remedy, it is currently trending on social media as the ‘it’ ingredient for regaining your razzle and dazzle!

Pearl powder is now being used for facials in elite spas and clinics,  and it’s trending as an ingredient for DIY beauty masks at home. It is as its name suggests: ground pearl. It is made from crushed freshwater or saltwater pearls. Knowing this gives it a special kind of glamour.

Victoria Beckham reportedly swears by it for its skin-brightening effects, saying: “I take a few supplements every day. One of them is pearl powder. It’s meant to be great for the skin and has anti-ageing properties.”

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop brand has featured pearl powder in several products and praised it in skincare articles. She says of it: “Pearl powder has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries. It’s detoxifying, brightening, and mineral-rich. We love it in our adaptogenic blends.”

    What Is Pearl Powder?

    what is pearl powder

Pearl powder is made from real pearls ground into an ultra-fine, silky dust.

Whenever I think of pearls, I think of a special occasion. When the pearl necklace comes out, it’s always for a good reason. Wearing pearls around your neck makes you feel regal and set apart.

Pearls are also beautiful. Too beautiful to crush and mix into a facial, surely?

I was relieved to read that the pearls crushed for pearl powder are typically not suitable for jewelry, yet still rich in natural minerals. When ground, the final powder contains calcium, magnesium, zinc, amino acids, and conchiolin. Conchiolin is the same protein which gives pearls their luminous sheen. It is believed to boost skin regeneration.

The use of pearl powder isn’t a trend focused on opulence and indulgence. Rather, pearl powder is one of the oldest skincare ingredients in the world. It has been hailed as a ‘glow-from-within’ remedy and promises radiant skin, brightened eyes, and calm from the inside out.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, pearl powder has been used for over 1 000 years for both internal and external healing. It was a favourite among Chinese royalty, often consumed or applied to preserve a youthful, bright complexion.

However, its benefits aren’t just historical folklore. Modern studies have begun exploring pearl powder’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and collagen-supporting properties.

How To Use Pearl Powder For Eyes

One of the most popular modern applications is pearl powder for the under-eye area. Many people mix a small pinch of the powder with a drop of water, aloe vera gel, or their favourite eye cream to create a soothing, brightening paste.

This is then applied gently under the eyes to reduce puffiness, lighten dark circles, and soothe tired skin.

Because pearl powder is so fine, it absorbs quickly into the skin without leaving a gritty texture. It’s also gentle enough for the delicate eye area, unlike harsher chemical brighteners. Regular use, especially at night, can help refresh your eyes and give them a youthful glow.

How Much Pearl Powder To Take Daily

Taking pearl powder as a supplement

Pearl powder can also be used as a supplement. If you’re looking to try pearl powder as a supplement, dosage is key.

Most traditional herbalists recommend around 250 to 500 mg per day for general health and beauty benefits. Some enthusiasts mix pearl powder into smoothies, tea, or simply take it in capsule form.

Always start with a low dose to assess tolerance, and consult a qualified healthcare provider if you’re unsure, especially if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.

Internally, pearl powder is said to calm the mind, improve sleep, boost the mood, and support skin health from within. Thanks to its high calcium content, it’s also valued for bone support and stress relief.

Where To Buy Pearl Powder In The UK

As pearl powder has gained popularity, it’s become more widely available online. If you’re wondering where to buy pearl powder UK residents trust, look for reputable health food stores, Chinese herbal shops, or specialist skincare retailers.

Leading brands such as Sunfood, Dragon Herbs, and White Lotus offer lab-tested pearl powder both as a supplement and for topical use. Be sure to choose a brand that uses high-quality, non-contaminated pearls and has good customer reviews.

Some luxury UK spas and wellness clinics have even begun offering facials or massage treatments using pearl powder, further highlighting its growing appeal in the beauty and aesthetics world.

What Makes Pearl Powder So Special?

Pearl powder is renowned for many reasons. It is anti-inflammatory, rich in minerals, gentle on sensitive skin, and backed by centuries of use. From lightening under-eye circles to calming the nervous system and giving skin a dewy finish, it is a rare ingredient which works both topically and internally.

“In Chinese medicine, the powder is said to be detoxifying and is used as an anti-inflammatory and a relaxant. In Ayurvedic medicine, pearl is said to be an antidote for poison, and it was also used in love potions,” writes Healthline. “Pearl powder contains amino acids, calcium, and trace minerals and has many purported benefits for skin and health.”

Whether you’re stirring it into your morning smoothie or patting it under your eyes before bed, pearl powder is a gentle but powerful way to incorporate ancient beauty wisdom into your modern routine.

Is it as expensive as a string of pearl necklaces? On average, pearl powder in the UK costs between £25 and £60 for a standard 50 to 100g container, depending on the brand, purity, and intended use.
