Teabags for Broken Nails: The DIY Fix You Have to Try

Have you ever broken a nail just before a big event or right when you were planning to do your nails? Yikes. Instead of grabbing scissors to cut the whole nail down, you can fix it easily using a teabag.

Yes, you heard that right, a teabag. This simple DIY hack is a great way to repair your nail while keeping it strong enough for polish or gel. But how you can use a humble teabag to mend your nail?

    Step-by-Step Guide

It turns out that teabags aren’t just for a comforting cup of tea. Who would have known? They’re perfect for fixing broken nails! The teabag’s mesh-like texture acts as a sort of bridge that holds your nail together until it grows out enough to trim. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to fix a split nail at home.

    1. Gather Your Supplies. You need a teabag, nail glue, a top coat, a pair of small scissors and a nail file.
    2. Prepare the Teabag. Cut a small piece of the teabag big enough to cover the entire break in your nail. Make sure to remove any tea inside so that you’re just left with the thin mesh material.
    3. Fix the Nail. Gently push the broken edges of the nail together, making sure they line up as smoothly as possible. Apply a small drop of nail glue over the break.
    4. Apply the Teabag. Before the glue dries, place the cut piece of the teabag over the glued area. Think of it like putting a mesh plaster over a cut—the teabag acts as a reinforcement, holding the nail in place.
    5. Smooth and Secure. Let the glue dry completely, then apply a layer of top coat to seal everything in. This top coat will act as a seal, ensuring the teabag stays put and gives the nail a smooth surface for polishing.
    6. Trim and File. Trim any excess teabag hanging over the edge of your nail. Use a nail file to smooth out any rough parts around the edges, so everything looks neat and seamless.
    7. Apply Polish or Gel. Once everything is secure, you can go ahead and paint your nails as usual. The teabag mesh will be virtually invisible under a couple of layers of polish or gel.

It’s important to refresh the teabag repair with each manicure. The goal is to keep it secure until your nail has had enough time to grow out. This would allow you to trim off the damaged part completely. Depending on the rate of your nail growth, you might need to repeat the teabag trick every week or so. It’s a great way to keep your nails looking flawless and prevent the break from worsening. And it is dirt cheap.

    Why Teabags Are Ideal

So, why exactly do teabags work so well? The fibrous mesh material of a teabag is ideal. It works by reinforcing a split because it’s thin yet strong enough to provide stability to the nail. Unlike some other DIY fixes, a teabag is smooth and flexible. So it doesn’t create awkward lumps on your nail surface. It blends in easily under nail polish. So no one will even know you’ve had a nail mishap!

Giorgia Cappella, a well-known nail artist and trainer at The GelBottle, recommends this trick for anyone wanting to extend the life of their nails without resorting to cutting them all down. According to Giorgia, “this simple teabag trick can be a real lifesaver, helping you maintain the length of your nails even after a break”.

Before applying the teabag and glue, ensure your nails are completely clean. They have to be free from any residual polish or oil. This will help the adhesive bond properly and create a stronger repair. When using nail glue, apply it sparingly. A little goes a long way. Using too much can result in a bumpy surface, which will require extra filing to smooth out. Finally, when applying your top coat and polish, stick to thin layers. This will help prevent a thick, uneven finish and give your nails a more natural, polished look. That’s it.

    Perfect for Emergencies

This teabag repair hack is a perfect solution for those moments when you don’t want to cut all your nails just because of one annoying break. Who doesn’t hate that moment. Teabags keep your manicure looking great, and no one will ever know you’re secretly sporting a DIY repair. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to save time and money by skipping an emergency salon visit.

Next time you find yourself with a broken nail, reach for a teabag and give this a try. You might be surprised at just how effective and easy it is. And the best part? You only waste one bag and still get to enjoy your favourite brew while giving your nails a little TLC. Fab.
