    Should you have a Rhinoplasty?

A tough question to ask unless you do some digging. Rhinoplasty is famously known as a “nose job”. It is a corrective procedure performed on the nose which can be surgical or non-surgical. The procedure can be undertaken for cosmetic and non-cosmetic reasons. For non-cosmetic purposes, people can improve the functionality of their nose, like for improved breathing. For cosmetic purposes the appearance of the nose is altered.

These procedures can be performed by a maxillofacial surgeon (specialises in issues related to the jaw, face, or neck), an otolaryngologist (specialises in problems with the ear, nose, or throat), or a plastic surgeon.

    Types of Rhinoplasty

There are two types of surgical rhinoplasty. The first one is open rhinoplasty which involves a cut to the columella, which is the fleshy part that separates the nostrils. On the other hand, with closed rhinoplasty, everything takes place within the nasal cavity. In this case, the columella is not cut.

The non-surgical method corrects small defects of the nose by having the practitioner inject fillers below the skin. Compared to the surgical method, this type of procedure doesn’t produce long-lasting effects.

It was found that in 5%-20% of cases, the patient has to go back to the specialist in order for revision rhinoplasty to be performed as the first procedure was not completely successful.

    Why Get Rhinoplasty?

    • Congenital abnormalities. Some people are born with congenital defects involving the nose, which create breathing difficulties. These can be corrected through surgical rhinoplasty
    • Accidents. Nose damage caused by accidents may require surgical correction in order to restore nose function
    • Cosmetic Purposes. People unhappy with the aspect of their nose can opt for this type of procedure in order to create a nose whose shape is proportionate to the rest of the face

    Why Not?

    • Risky. Every procedure has some risk attached to it, hence why you need to do proper research on what procedure is best for you as well as high-quality clinics in order to avoid the risk of infection
    • You may not heal well. Even if the surgery was successful, after the procedure you might find that you are not healing properly.
    • You may require revision surgery. Not all rhinoplasty surgeries are successful and thus you might have to go back for a follow-up surgery
    • A big change in your overall appearance. If your appearance isn’t natural i.e your nose doesn’t look realistic or doesn’t blend well with the rest of your features, there’s a high chance you won’t like the end result.
    • Price. Any type of surgery is expensive whether it’s surgical or non-surgical.

    Common Surgical Cosmetic Procedures

    ProcedureDescription
RhinoplastyNose reshaping to improve its appearance
FaceliftTightens sagging facial skin and tissue
BlepharoplastyEyelid surgery to correct drooping eyelids or bags under the eyes
LiposuctionRemoval of excess fat from specific body areas
Breast AugmentationEnhancement of breast size and shape
    Breast ReductionReduction of breast size
Breast LiftLifting and firming sagging breasts
Tummy TuckAbdominal contouring to remove excess skin and fat
Buttock AugmentationEnhancement of buttock size and shape
Body LiftA combination of procedures to contour the entire body
    Table of surgical beauty treatments

Whether you are trying to correct a nasal abnormality or you want a more aesthetically pleasing nose, make sure you do proper research on what surgeon to choose. If possible, try seeking recommendations from people who’ve already had the procedure. Make sure you choose a clinic based on its reputation in the industry and not based on which one is offering cheaper prices.
