Perfume Impact on Skin Health: The Latest Research

Perfumes are great. They make us smell really good. They make us feel better. Perfume, however is made up of essential oils and other chemicals that may be harmful to your skin. There are lots of perfumes brands out there and some of they may cause irritation to your skin. But why is that, and what can we do about it?

    Chemical Concerns in Perfumes

Many fragrances contain a mix of synthetic chemicals that can cause allergic reactions, hormonal disruptions, and even cancer. For instance, phthalates, used to make fragrances last longer, have been linked to various health issues including reproductive harm, developmental problems in children, and chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Another concerning chemical, styrene, found in some fragrances, has been identified as a likely human carcinogen. So make sure you check the labels and always buy perfume from established companies.

    Industry Changes and Safer Practices

    perfume

In response to these growing health concerns in the UK and abroad, some perfume companies are working to create safer formulations, for the skin and the environment. There is an increasing trend towards transparency and the use of natural ingredients. Brands are now more frequently listing fragrance components on their labels. Many of which were previously hidden under generic terms like “fragrance” or “parfum”. So we are making some progress.

Additionally, companies are now embracing some certifications like the EWG VERIFIED mark, which ensures products are free from harmful chemicals and meet stricter health standards.

The EWG VERIFIED mark is a certification provided by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit organisation based in the United States, with its headquarters located in Washington DC. They help identify products meeting strict health and transparency standards. EWG mainly focuses on issues related to environmental health and consumer protection within the USA, but their research and consumer guides are used worldwide. Products that have this mark have been tested to ensure they are free from harmful chemicals and meet high standards of ingredient disclosure. Why? Because safety is key.

Key Criteria for EWG VERIFIED Products

    • Ingredient Safety: Products must avoid ingredients that EWG considers harmful. This includes substances linked to cancer, developmental toxicity, endocrine disruption, and other health concerns.
    • Transparency: All ingredients, including those used in fragrances, must be fully disclosed on the product label. This ensures consumers are informed about what is in the products they use.
    • Good Manufacturing Practices: Products must adhere to good manufacturing practices to ensure quality and safety during production.

Benefits of the EWG VERIFIED Mark

The EWG VERIFIED mark which is now showing up on a lot of packaging, helps consumers easily identify products that are safer for their health and the environment. By choosing products with this certification, consumers can avoid harmful chemicals and support companies that are committed to health and safety standards. Ensuring we all make healthier choices for ourselves and our families is key. This mark is trying to build consumer trust by guaranteeing transparency firstly. Secondly it adheres to strict safety criteria, promoting a more conscientious approach to personal care products, like perfume and others.

    Non-Toxic Perfume Brands

    Non-Toxic Perfume Brands

Perfumes often contain a mix of synthetic chemicals that can cause skin irritation and other health issues. However, there are several brands now focusing on creating non-toxic, natural, and safe fragrances. These brands avoid harmful chemicals like phthalates, parabens, and formaldehyde, ensuring their products are safe for both users and the environment.

    1. The 7 Virtues
Offers vegan, cruelty-free perfumes that are free from phthalates, parabens, and formaldehyde. Their scents, like Vanilla Woods and Lotus Pear, are crafted using ethically sourced, organic ingredients, and the packaging is FSC-certified, highlighting their commitment to sustainability and ethical practices.

    2. Skylar
Creates hypoallergenic, non-toxic perfumes using natural ingredients. Products like Capri Summer, are cruelty-free and come in sustainable packaging. Skylar prioritise transparency and eco-friendliness and avoid harsh chemicals and allergens.

    3. Heretic Parfum
Produces bold, unconventional scents using organic and wildcrafted botanicals. Their fragrances, like Dirty Peach and Dirty Coconut, are free from synthetic ingredients and packaged in minimalist, eco-friendly bottles. The brand is kind of rebellious but has a sustainable edge.

    4. Abel Odor
100% natural perfumes made from plant-derived ingredients. Their collection includes captivating scents like Golden Neroli. The brand is dedicated to sustainable practices and environmental responsibility with safe and eco-friendly products.

    5. Living Libations
A blend of essential oils, plant extracts, and alcohol is used to create their fragrances. Free from harmful chemicals and synthetics. Perfumes are made with a focus on purity, quality, and holistic wellness. This commitment makes this brand a popular choice for safe and effective natural fragrances.

    6. Esas
Pioneers chemical-free fragrances with their Farm-to-Beauty scents, which are non-toxic, cruelty-free, and sustainably packaged. Their products offer a luxurious experience but with environmental responsibility. They use rich, multifaceted aromas but never compromise on consumer safety.

    Practical Advice for Consumers

To reduce the risk of adverse reactions, it is best to do a patch test before using a new perfume. This test is very simple to do at home. Apply a small amount to your skin and check for any signs of irritation. That’s it. For those sensitive to fragrance chemicals, opting for products with transparent ingredient lists and those free from known irritants like phthalates and styrene is highly recommended. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) recommends using their Skin Deep® database to find safer personal care products.

While perfumes have been a fav of personal care for centuries, it’s crucial to be aware of the potential health risks associated with their chemical ingredients. By staying informed and choosing safer products, you can enjoy the benefits of perfumes without any negative impact on your health. And that is great.

Remember that not all perfume is bad. It’s okay to use perfumes just as long as you use it in moderation. Keep yourself safe and healthy and be aware of what chemicals are in those products you are using.

I was recommended by a perfume maker (the guy has a small perfume factory somewhere) not to apply perfume on the skin anymore, due to the vast amounts of chemicals it contains.
He said to apply it on clothes if possible (some perfumes leave stains on clothes, though).

He also referred to perfume prices which are ridiculously expensive. On average, £3 per bottle can make a profit for any kind of perfume with any futuristic design and glass colour. But they sell perfumes with £10-£20 and even more (because the TV commercials and printed ads need financial support).

Aquaphor is my old stand-by. It’s petroleum jelly based, so it holds in moisture and protects your skin longer than a standard lanolin based lotion will.

Great article I didn’t realise perfumes could actually cause health problems. The stat that 95% of the materials used for perfume come from petrolium was even more shocking. I will definitely rethink buying it moving forward.
