Laser Hair Removal: Is It Really Worth It?

From smoother skin to fewer ingrown hairs, why people are making the switch.

Unwanted hair can be a nuisance, and for many, the constant cycle of shaving, waxing, and plucking is more of a chore than a choice. That’s why laser hair removal has gained popularity. It promises longer-lasting results with minimal upkeep. But is it truly worth the hype? And what should you do if it’s not the right fit for your skin, hair, or budget?

This guide breaks down how laser hair removal works, the benefits it offers, the limitations you need to consider, and how it compares to more traditional hair removal methods like waxing, epilation, and depilatory creams. Whether you’re looking for a permanent solution or just a more comfortable routine, we’ve got all the facts to help you decide what’s best for you.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal uses a handheld device to send a pulse of laser light to a group of hair follicles, which disables and destroys the hair’s root, without harming your skin. This is followed by an immediate cooling spray, cooling the area so you don’t experience any intense pain – you might just feel a bit of discomfort.

What are the benefits of laser hair removal?

    • Unlike waxing, you don’t have to grow your hair out in preparation for laser hair removal, so you won’t have to cover up for 2-3 weeks and can shave as normal
    • Drastically reduces hair growth, allowing you to stop shorter term methods like waxing and shaving
    • Suitable for anywhere on the body (bikini lines, stomach, face, legs, back etc…).
    • Less painful treatment than waxing or epilation
    • Your skin will feel amazingly smooth
    • Professional machines can accommodate all skin types
    • No ingrown hairs
    • Low maintenance option – you will only need to attend every 6 months after your initial 6 treatment sessions

Are there any down sides to laser hair removal treatment?

    • It is pricey as a one-off payment, compared to budgeting for waxing and shaving equipment. However, if you’re able to look at laser hair removal as an investment, this won’t be such a turn off.
Works most effectively on fairer skin

Laser hair removal: quick fire facts

    • Its success is very dependent on hair colour, as well as skin type
    • Only effective on actively growing hairs
    • Treatments need to be spaced 3-8 weeks apart, depending on the targeted area

    What are the alternatives?

So what are you options if you decide laser hair removal isn’t for you?

    Shaving:
Pros = Cheap, easy and predictable.
Cons = not a long lasting solution and can be fiddly on delicate areas of skin.

    Waxing:
Pros = long lasting results, can be used on all parts of the body.
Cons = sensitive areas will prove painful and results are best when it’s professionally carried out.

    Epilation:
Pros = long term results and fuss-free.
Cons = not so suitable for sensitive areas and can be painful.

    Depilatory cream:
Pros = least painful means of removing unwanted hair, good for first timers.
Cons = messy and no long lasting.

Choosing how to manage unwanted hair is ultimately a personal decision. A decision shaped not only by budget and skin type but also by lifestyle, comfort and your priorities. While advancements in technology have made permanent options like laser more accessible, the truth is that no method is one-size-fits-all. What works for one person may not suit another, and that’s perfectly okay.

What matters most is that you feel empowered by your choice, not burdened by it. Aiming for convenience, minimal discomfort, or long-term results is good. But the ultimate goal should be to support your routine, not complicate it. Hair removal, like all things in beauty and wellness, should be about feeling more confident in your skin. So take your time, listen to your body, and explore what aligns with your needs, not just social media trends.

I absolutely love the results of laser hair removal! I had been dealing with extremely thick, dark facial hair for years and thought I had no other option than to live with it. After researching laser hair removal, I decided to give it a try, and am so glad I did.

I suffer from ingrown hair so much when shaving but the pain of waxing is just too much. I have been shopping around for an alternative and this blog just convinced me that I need to try laser hair removal. I would rather pay a once off lump sum than to constantly deal with ingrown bumps.
