In recent years, our awareness of the importance of gut health has skyrocketed! A growing body of research has revealed that your gut (yes, that’s your tummy and intestines) actually has a major impact on your mood, complexion, and health.

If we look at the stats, a 2023 survey found that 80% of European consumers are concerned about gut health. Between 2023 and 2024, searches for high-fibre foods increased by 159%, and high protein by 39%. It seems the old saying “we are what we eat” might just be spot on, because as numerous studies have shown, what happens inside our bodies can absolutely affect the outside of our bodies, in particular, our skin!

This connection, often referred to as the gut-skin axis (which we will dive into shortly), highlights just how crucial your gut microbiome, diet, and overall digestive health are for maintaining a healthy, glowing, and gorgeous dermis.

This new level of awareness and motivation to improve our gut health has given rise to numerous gut-boosting recipes, from kimchi to sauerkraut, apple cider vinegar, and a whole range of other gut-friendly goodies. People are diving headfirst into recipes aimed at boosting their microbiome. So, buckle up, because here we go!

    Gut Microbiome Basics

We can hear the wheels turning, what on earth is a gut microbiome? That is a great question! In simple terms, your gut microbiome is the mix of tiny living things, like bacteria, viruses, and fungi, that live in your digestive system, mainly in your intestines.

Sound gross? Not at all! Because this little community is really important for your health. It helps break down food that your body cannot digest by itself. Did you know you have more bacteria living in your gut than actual cells in your body? Pretty wild, right? But they are not just hanging out, they help you digest food, fight off bad bacteria, and even support your immune system. In fact, around 70 – 80% of your immune cells live in your gut, making your microbiome a key part of keeping you healthy.

How amazing is that? Beyond amazing. Thank you gut microbiome!

The Surprising Link Between Your Gut Health And Skin

Remember the term gut-skin axis mentioned earlier? In short, this term describes the somewhat complex link between your gut bacteria and skin health. The shocking thing is, the health of the one can impact the other, and when there is an imbalance in your gut microbiome (dysbiosis) it can wreak havoc on your skin.

Let’s have a slightly deeper look into this significant relationship.

So, How Exactly Does Your Gut Health Affect Your Skin?

    • Inflammation And Immune Response
One key way your gut health affects your skin health is through inflammation. When your gut microbiome is disrupted, it can lead to a condition known as leaky gut, where the intestinal lining becomes more permeable. This allows harmful substances, like toxins and undigested food particles, to enter your bloodstream and cause systemic inflammation. Let us not be fooled, chronic inflammation is a common factor in many skin conditions, such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Therefore, by keeping your gut microbiome healthy, you can help control inflammation and potentially reduce these skin issues. Yes please!
    • Nutrient Absorption
Naturally, your gut plays a crucial role in absorbing nutrients essential for healthy skin. Vitamins and minerals like vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, and zinc are vital for maintaining skin health. A well-functioning gut ensures these nutrients are efficiently absorbed and actually used by your body. For example, vitamin A is important for skin cell renewal and repair, while zinc supports wound healing and has anti-inflammatory properties. If your gut is not working properly, you might experience deficiencies in these nutrients, leading to dull, dry skin and exacerbating existing skin conditions.
    • Hormonal Balance
As many of us know, hormones are crucial for maintaining healthy skin, and your gut microbiome can influence your hormonal balance. Sadly, your gut microbiome can affect how oestrogen is metabolised, and you would not believe how important oestrogen is! It plays a vital role in your skin’s hydration and elasticity, and imbalances in oestrogen levels can really wreak havoc on your skin, leading to issues such as acne or premature ageing. Additionally, your gut microbiome can impact your cortisol level (the hormone related to stress). High cortisol levels can increase oil production in your skin, potentially contributing to acne as well. So, by supporting your gut health, you can help maintain hormonal balance, which in turn benefits your skin. What do you have to lose, right?

Tips On How To Nourish Your Gut (And Thus Nourish Your Skin)

Fuel Your Body With A Balanced Diet

A diet rich in fibre, prebiotics, and probiotics goes a long way in supporting a healthy gut microbiome. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fermented foods (like yoghourt, kefir, and sauerkraut) promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in your gut.

Also, prebiotics, found in foods like bananas, garlic, and onions, serve as nourishment for these beneficial bacteria, helping them thrive. Of course, this is not a foolproof method that guarantees perfect skin, but your body as a whole will thank you.

Conversely, remember that a diet high in processed foods, sugar, and refined carbs can negatively impact your gut health and, consequently, your skin health. Therefore, reducing your intake of these foods can help maintain a balanced gut microbiome and thus help improve your skin’s appearance.

Quench Your Thirst And Stay Hydrated

Adequate hydration is crucial for your gut health, your skin health, and yes, your overall health!

Let us not forget that water helps flush out toxins from your body, supports digestion, and maintains skin hydration. So, please aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day to support optimal gut function and help keep your skin looking dewy and radiant.

    Calm Your Mind

You know it! Chronic stress is believed to disrupt your gut health and exacerbate certain skin issues. Therefore, incorporating stress management techniques, such as mindfulness, meditation, and regular exercise, can actually help lead to clearer, healthier skin.

    Consider Taking Probiotics

Probiotic supplements can be super beneficial for those looking to enhance their gut health, as these supplements contain live beneficial bacteria that help restore balance to your gut microbiome. However, it is essential to choose high-quality probiotics and consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen.

    Avoid Unnecessary Antibiotics (If Possible)

If a doctor prescribes antibiotics, by all means, use them! We are simply trying to convey that antibiotics can seriously disrupt your gut microbiome by killing both harmful and beneficial bacteria. While antibiotics are sometimes necessary for treating certain infections, it is crucial to use them judiciously and only when prescribed by a healthcare provider. Especially since the overuse of antibiotics can lead to imbalances in your gut bacteria, which may subsequently affect your skin health. There you have it.

Signs Your Gut Health Is In Dire Need Of Some TLC

Your skin aside, poor gut health can really have a surprising range of effects on both your body and mind. One of the most apparent signs is digestive trouble, such as persistent bloating, excessive gas, and erratic bowel movements, including constipation and diarrhoea. Yep, no thank you, right? But these symptoms signal that something may be amiss in your digestive process.

If you suddenly develop intolerances to certain foods, this could be another red flag. Unlike food allergies, which involve a full-blown immune response, food intolerances arise from your gut’s difficulty in breaking down specific foods, leading to discomfort, bloating, or nausea.

Unexpected weight changes can also be linked to gut health issues, as your gut plays a crucial role in nutrient absorption and fat storage. The more you know, right?

The most exciting, of course, is mood swings, anxiety, and even depression, as all of these can actually be tied to gut health! Yes, it is not necessarily you, it could be your gut! Since your gut produces a significant portion of your body’s serotonin (often called the happy hormone), an unhappy gut can potentially lead to an unhappy mind.

Bad breath, or halitosis, that persists despite regular brushing can also be a sign of poor digestion and gut imbalance. You might also experience intense cravings for sugar and carbs, driven by an imbalanced gut microbiome.

Oh, But Let Us Not Forget About Skincare!

Now, putting gut health aside for a moment, it is equally important to consider how skincare practices can complement your gut health efforts. Using gentle, non-irritating skincare products, avoiding harsh chemicals, and maintaining a consistent skincare routine can help address skin concerns and support your overall skin health.

    What We Have Learned

The link between gut health and skin, as well as gut health and acne, is a compelling example of how interconnected our bodily systems are. By nurturing your gut through a balanced diet, proper hydration, stress management, and mindful use of supplements, you can positively impact your skin’s appearance and overall health.

As research continues to explore this connection, adopting a holistic approach that considers both gut and skin health is maybe not the worst idea. So, the next time you think about your skincare routine, remember that a healthy gut is a fundamental piece of the puzzle for achieving radiant skin.
